Avebury Solstice 2012

Jul

13

Well the sun rise at 4.52 am on the Solstice, but you'd have to take someone's word for it, the rain stopped but the heavy cloud  gave no clue. For those who attended the Solstice in the  Avebury circle, which were far fewer than last year, braved the elements and celebrated in two quadrants of the circle.

Adam and Eve Avebury on sunnier days

To the North, behind the Adam & Eve great stones the 'Avebury Stag' welcomed the assemble Pagans. I think about 20 gathered in a circle around the gifts of fruit, wine and flowers. We joined hands at sunrise to celebrate the event, I held the hand of  a Dutch lady (I think she was?) who's warm hand on that cold damp morning held mine for some 10 minutes. And that's what made it something special, that's part of what it's about, us...the sacred place...and the timless value of each other.

If any others here were in that circle, I hope the damp is not the memory you have. Many had travelled from Europe and further to be there and the English rain hadn't stopped them.

South East Avebury Circle
picure taken in the evening

To the South, the East quadrant came alive to Gongs and drumming, fire-eaters and jugglers. More celebrated in that part of the circle but alas you can't be in two places at once! So not too sure what else happened.

That sounds like a wonderful celebration to me-the damp I've found is something that you get used to being a veteran of working/celebrating outdoors in Britain
It's been many, many years since I've been to Avebury-still looks awesome-I must revisit some time.

Just to show how amazing a clear morning makes I've added a couple more of images of mine from the 2010 Summer Solstice sunrise on my 'More Blog Entries link'...where you there? If only it was always like that.
